St Christopher’s is a well-established PRU in Ipswich which continues to develop and expand the services it offers children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, mainstream schools and families with our dedicated, trained and experienced staff team. The unit provides 12 full time places for KS2 (7-11 yrs) and KS3 (11-14 yrs). The Montgomery Road site offers a further 8 full time places for pupils in KS4 (15-16 yrs).
All pupils placed at the St Christopher’s are dual registered and are expected to return to mainstream school after a two term stay with us. The success rate at St Christopher’s is very high, with the majority of our pupils returning successfully to a mainstream setting. Montgomery Road is a destination setting, catering for KS4 pupils requiring a small, bespoke setting to access accredited courses and best support transition post-16 into college or apprenticeship placements.
Although St. Christopher’s is not a large site we manage to make great use of it. We have 3 classrooms and a kitchen, as well as a hall and a small outside play area. St. Christopher’s hall is also home to the Daisy Chain Playgroup from 8.30am until 12.00pm every day.
St Christopher’s PRU promotes the ideals of nurturing young people so that their emotional intelligence develops and grows within a protected environment. To this end, all staff at the PRU model and encourage a caring and inclusive approach to learning.
In the PRU’s last Ofsted report of June 2013 it was stated that: ‘Pupils enjoy their learning and feel safe in the caring and stimulating environment provided’. The report went on to say: ‘The unit provides a calm and restful environment in which the pupils can learn and play safely’. St Christopher’s plays a key role in re-engaging pupils in education, helping to boost self-esteem and confidence. As one appreciative parent commented: ‘St Christopher’s has changed my son’s life!’
We believe that once pupils are engaged with learning and feel valued and are able to achieve some form of success then they will begin to thrive. It is also vital to support the pupil’s primary carer, as a child cannot learn if they are worried about their home life all the time. Therefore, St. Christopher’s is geared up to assist the ‘whole’ child not just the ‘school’ child.
We hope you enjoy looking at our website. The staff and pupils welcome visitors at the unit and should you wish to visit us please contact the Headteacher to arrange an appointment.
